Career Convo Guide

“You can choose courage or you can choose comfort, but you cannot choose both.”

- Brene Brown

Personal growth and growing individuals on my team are important to me. I use this Career Conversation Guide to facilitate the initial career conversation with people that report to me. I originally created this template for myself. I was in my 30s before any manager ever had a real career conversation with me. I had no idea how to do it so I created this template for myself to facilitate the conversation. I found it worked well and have used it ever since with my teams.

The Career Conversation Guide serves three purposes:

  • Understanding Motivations - individuals motivations can vary greatly. Understanding what drives someone is key to enabling them in their career.

  • Identifying Strengths and Opportunities - before you have worked with someone closely, it is helpful to hear from them what they believe their strengths and growth opportunities are.

  • Defining Goals - every career conversation should result in some action.
